Sanctuary 5Rhythms® – Points of Practice
These agreements are here to hold the container of our practice together. By attending, you are part of this shared commitment.
On the dance floor.
As much as possible, enter, re-enter, and be on the dance floor in quiet. The floor is for movement. Please keep phones tucked away and conversations outside the space. This is a place for presence, not recording or spectating.
Consent and respect.
Dance with others only when there is a clear mutual yes. A yes and a no are equally honoured. Every body has sovereignty, and every dancer’s boundaries matter.
Arrive clear.
This is a sober practice. Please come free from recreational intoxicants, with as much clarity of mind and body as possible, ready to meet yourself and others.
Beginning and ending.
As much as possible, please arrive on time and stay until the end. The arc of the class is a shared container we hold together.
How we move.
Dance barefoot or in clean, indoor-only shoes. Socks are best if they have grip. Wear clothing that allows freedom of movement and expect to sweat. Please bring water in your own container.
Scent awareness.
For the wellbeing of all, please avoid perfumes, colognes, or strongly scented products.
Health and care.
If you are unwell, please rest at home and return when you are ready. Masks are always welcome. Chairs are available for seated practice, and adaptations can be made — speak with me if you need support.
Inclusivity.
Everybody is welcome — across age, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, income level, life experience, and physical ability. Beginners are welcome. Move at the pace that honours your body.
For those with limited income: Esquimalt Recreation offers an Access Pass (formerly the LIFE Program) for low-income community members. You are welcome to apply. If you hold an Access Pass, you are warmly invited to use it for this class, and your participation is fully honoured.
Community care.
As in any community, moments of discomfort may arise. We are learning together. If harm or discomfort arises, we practice repair — by naming it, tending to it, and seeking support when needed.
Honour your dance.
The invitation is to move as you are. Each expression is valid. It is a practice, not a performance.
Land acknowledgement.
We dance on the traditional, unceded territories of the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. With gratitude, we honour the people, the land, and the waters that hold us.
